In 1723, the church and organ of Störmthal, a village close to Leipzig was rebuilt on a commission by Statz Friedrich von Fullen. He requested approval of the organ by Bach, already Kapellmeister in Leipzig. He must have liked the instrument, because he wrote this special cantata for the consecration of the church and the instrument, and conducted the first performance on November 2nd 1723. Strangely enough, the organ does not play a part in the cantata. The cantata was later performed again on Trinity Sunday on at least three occasions.
The Störmthal Organ has basically not changed since Bach''s time, apart from some restaurations. Worth a visit?
